SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Skateboarders on San Francisco’s west side have a new place to ollie in the city, Recreation and Park Department officials announced Thursday.
The skate area, located in Sunset Dunes park near Sloat Boulevard, was designed for skaters of all skill levels. It includes a bank, quarter pipe, island feature, and several creatively designed elements with views of the ocean.
“For too long, skaters on this side of the city had nowhere to call home. Now, they’ve got one, and it’s at a beautiful community park right by the ocean,” said Eliza Panike, a volunteer with Friends of Sunset Dunes.
Since its opening in mid-April, Sunset Dunes has already become one of the city’s most popular parks, averaging more than 3,400 daily visits.
SF Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg said, “With the help of our talented local skaters, Sunset Dunes is well on its way to becoming the city’s next great skate destination.”
“Sunset Dunes is becoming a gathering place for all types of outdoor recreation – walking, biking and now skating,” Panike said. “The west side is finally getting long-awaited skate infrastructure.”
The skate features, part of an $80,000-project at Sunset Dunes, are located next to an existing bike pump track.
