Stray cat tests positive for rabies in Woodsboro; health officials warn community

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Health officials are warning neighbors in the Woodsboro community to stay alert after a stray cat tested positive for rabies.

The Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) on June 19 said animal control removed a gray and white cat from the Woodsboro Pike, near the Southern edge of the Woodsboro town limits, for showing aggressive behavior, a symptom of the rabies infection.

Days later, the health department was notified that the cat tested positive for rabies. Officials said it did not have a microchip or ear tip, and it was between eight to 10 years old.

“Rabies can be prevented by avoiding contact with stray or wild animals,” said Barry Glotfelty, Director for FCHD’s Environmental Health Services. “Making sure your pets are vaccinated is another key action you can take to protect yourself and others.”

The viral disease mainly impacts animals through the saliva of the infected animal.

If you or your pets have contact with a stray or wild animal, report it to animal control at 301-600-1544.
