LUBBOCK, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Texas Tech University officials said the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit have identified the suspect who died following a shooting near Jones AT&T Stadium Tuesday.
According to officials, police said Rhino Simboli, 63, was killed after firing shots at officers who then returned fire.
Officials said Simboli was from Ohio and had ties to Florida and Texas. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
As was previously reported on MyHighPlains.com, officers conducted an unrelated traffic stop on the frontage road of the Marsha Sharp Freeway near the Jones AT&T Stadium when an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle.
The university said officers observed Simboli making “Unusual gestures” around the vehicle before he pulled a gun and fired shots at officers. The officers returned fire, killing him.
Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath said Simboli had no known affiliation with Texas Tech. The incident is under investigation by the Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit.
