FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — Freeport’s West Stephenson Street just broke ground on a new park that was made possible because of a $50,000 grant.
The park will include a grass lawn, picnic tables and a patio.
“A green space is a fantastic opportunity to make a public place, a place for seating, a place for interaction, enjoyment, and really for people to come together as a community,” said Greater Freeport Partnership Brand Director Nicole Hass.
The project was made possible by a T-Mobile partnership that gave the city $50,000. The T-Mobile Quarterly Hometown Grant Program helps communities grow and improve public areas.
“T-Mobile is all about building out communities,” said Marketing Manager Sidney Berrien. “So, right now we’re really focusing on smaller markets, rural areas and just trying to really get ingrained in the community so that they see what we’re all about.”
Freeport’s Mayor said the city always finds ways to improve the area.
“We look for opportunities all the time,” said Jodi Miller. “So, to receive this, we are very grateful. Any time that we can make a beautiful space to invite people in, we want to take those opportunities.”
The park is expected to be completed sometime this year.
