CHICAGO (WGN) — Loved ones and fellow officers are gathering Wednesday for a funeral honoring fallen Chicago police officer Krystal Rivera, who was tragically killed earlier this month.
The four-year veteran of the force was killed after she was accidentally shot by another police officer as they pursued a man who had allegedly fled from a nearby investigatory stop into a South Side apartment on Thursday, June 5.
On Wednesday, loved ones gathered as Rivera was laid to rest.
The service took place at Living Word Christian Center located in the 7600 block of Roosevelt Road in Forest Park.
The fallen officer’s funeral came a day after mourners lined up outside Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home on the Far Northwest Side for a visitation.
Rivera, a 36-year-old mother to a little girl, was described as a loving parent who was known for her courage and compassion.
“There’s no words to describe what you can say. It just hurts so much when you lose a family to senseless shootings,” Enrique Anaya, who worked for Rivera’s father, said during the visitation.
Two men have been charged in connection with the deadly shooting and charges against the second man came just days before Rivera’s service.
Police say 27-year-old Jaylin Arnold, an Avalon Park resident, has been charged with armed violence, three counts of possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender and a felony drug charge while the second suspect, 25-year-old Adrian Rucker, a Freeport resident, faces multiple felonies, including armed violence, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal drug possession.
Wednesday’s service is set to got underway at 12 p.m., and is being streamed live in the video player located at the top of this story.
