Each one represents a story of duty, bravery, and ultimately, sacrifice.
For Chicago police officer Krystal Rivera, her story took a turn for the worst in June when she was killed in the line of duty, a victim of friendly fire from a fellow officer.
“She chose a profession where she put her safety below the safety of everyone in the city,” Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling said.
On Wednesday, her name became the latest addition to the GSF Memorial Wall, which honors fallen CPD officers, dating back to when the department was founded in 1835.
“She takes her place among 606 brothers and sisters who answered the noble call so you and I can sleep well at night,” said Philip Kline, executive director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.
Rivera’s ceremonial addition to the GSF Memorial Wall was one of two events held on Wednesday to honor fallen CPD officers. Hours later, the names of all 607 fallen CPD officers were read aloud during a candlelight vigil.
