Limited updates given after 2 Texas Tech officers shot, suspect killed

LUBBOCK, Texas — Limited information was released after Texas Tech held a press conference on Tuesday regarding a shooting that left two officers injured and a suspect deceased.

Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath said the crime scene was being investigated by the Lubbock Metro Special Crimes Unit. Bonath said it was too preliminary to release the names of the suspect or the officers. Authorities also could not yet say whether the truck was stolen or owned by the suspect. However, Bonath said the suspect had no affiliation with Texas Tech and was likely not from the Lubbock area.

Authorities previously said Texas Tech Police officers were checking on a suspicious vehicle near Jones AT&T Stadium around 12:45 a.m.

Bonath said there were “two incidents that overlapped.” Officers were doing daily patrols and were dealing with an unrelated suspect from a traffic violation, when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. Bonath said the truck had its door open and wasn’t in a normal parking spot. Bonath said officers went to the scene to find out what was happening. From there, Bonath said he could not make any further statements about the events that occurred in the shooting.

Texas Tech PD said the suspect pulled a gun and shot the officers. Two officers had non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. The suspect was shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both of the Texas Tech Police officers were taken to University Medical Center by EMS.

As of Tuesday afternoon, one officer was still at University Medical Center, and the other was released to go home.
