UT Tyler poll reveals majority of Texans support Trump, Abbott border policies

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – A UT Tyler poll has revealed that a majority of registered voters in Texas support how President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott are handling immigration at the southern border.

The UT Tyler poll was conducted from March 28 through June 7 and asked 1,154 registered voters in Texas a number of questions about immigration and the border with Texas and Mexico.

When asked if the number of immigrants into the U.S. should change, 25% of Texans polled said the number should increase, while 38% of those polled said the number of immigrants should decrease.

When asked about how President Trump is handling immigration so far, 56% percent of those polls supported Trump’s work, while 39% opposed how he’s handled the border.

Even more of those polled support how Abbott has handled immigration with 58% percent of those polls supporting his work, while 37% opposed how Abbott’s handled immigration.

When it comes to building a wall at the southern border, Texans polls were mostly divided along party lines with 70% of Democrats opposing state funding for the wall and 81% percent of Republicans supporting state funding for a wall.

The poll also asked voters if they think a wall along the Texas-Mexico border is necessary for border safety. 55% of voters polled agreed that a wall was needed while 33% of voters disagreed.

The numbers were closer when those polled were asked if they support granting permanent legal status to immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally or overstayed their visa as a child. 44% of those polled supported granting permanent legal status to immigrants while 39% opposed granting legal status.
