INDIANAPOLIS — Three people are wounded and a 16-year-old has been arrested after an early morning shooting on Monument Circle.
The 16-year-old suspect has been preliminarily charged with unlawful carrying of a handgun by a minor. Officials said a gun was also found at the scene.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.
In addition to the three people shot and wounded, multiple businesses on the circle were damaged by gunfire, with at least a half dozen windows shattered.
Clean up crews spent the day repairing windows shattered on Monument Circle after dozens of gunshots rang out just before 2 a.m.
“It’s unacceptable,” said IMPD Deputy Chief Tonya Terry.
IMPD said officers were called to the intersection of South Meridian and West Washington Street to investigate a report of a person shot.
IMPD says three people, two men and one woman, were taken to the hospital after being wounded in the shooting.
A 16-year-old was arrested on a weapons charge, although the teen’s role in the shooting remains unclear.
“We won’t tolerate that behavior,” Terry said. “We remain laser focused on people come downtown and cause trouble and commit crimes.”
In addition to multiple windows pierced by gunfire at an eye doctor business, an upstairs window at the Monument Circle theatre was also broken, as was a front window at a sushi business.
In addition to the teen arrested on the circle, police reports show multiple juveniles, including a 15 and a 16-year-old, were arrested Sunday for illegal weapons possession along Georgia Street.
“Kids have no business carrying guns,” said Terry.
While the motive for the shooting on the Circle remains under investigation, police and workers downtown agree parents need to play a bigger role in public safety.
“We want parents to be paying attention to where their kids and what they’re doing,” said Terry.
Police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Because the suspect arrested in connection to the shooting is underage, his name and court records are not available.
Anyone with information on the shooting should contact IMPD at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 262-8477.
