Chicago Mayor Johnson vetoes 'snap' curfew ordinance passed this week by City Council

CHICAGO (WGN) — Mayor Brandon Johnson on Friday made good on his promise to veto an ordinance passed this week by the Chicago City Council that aimed to crack down on so-called ‘teen takeovers.’

The ordinance, passed Wednesday, would have given the police superintendent the power to declare a ‘snap’ curfew anywhere in the city within 30 minutes.

The council passed the proposal 27-22, not enough to override a veto.

In a statement, Johnson said violent crime is dropping due to investments in other community safety strategies. He said he wants to prioritize those efforts.
