Evacuation warning lifted for Antioch multi-acre grass fire

(KRON) — The Contra Costa Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE say crews are at the scene of a rapidly burning blaze in Antioch that has ripped through 209 acres. Officials are calling it the “Somersville Fire.”

The fire broke out at 7:28 p.m. Wednesday on Somersville Road.

An evacuation warning in Antioch was lifted just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

“Firefighters are aggressively working to contain the fire,” said officials. “The fire is burning in annual grass and brush allowing firefighters to work quickly to extinguish the fire. Stay out of the area to allow responding resources to make access through the fire roads.”

An air quality advisory was issued as smoke from the grass blaze is expected to impact Contra Costa County, per the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

“Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, the smell of smoke is possible, and air quality may become unhealthy as of Wednesday evening,” said the Bay Area Air District.

The cause of the fire is actively under investigation. There has been no reported containment. One person was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

In a social media post, the Antioch Police Department said it is assisting with the fire in the area of Black Diamond Mines. Commuters are advised to avoid the area starting at James Donlon Boulevard.

No nearby structures were impacted by the blaze.
