(KRON) – The first Golden State Valkyries player has won the WNBA’s Player of the Week. Forward Kayla Thornton was crowned the league’s Western Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
As a team, the Valkyries were 2-0 last week. Thornton managed an average of 20 points, 11.5 rebounds and one assist while shooting at 43.8%.
On Saturday night’s victory against the Seattle Storm, Thornton scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Thornton also made two foul shots with 13.1 seconds left to seal it. In the Valkyries’ matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 9, Thornton scored a clutch three-pointer that forced the game into overtime.
As of last season, Thornton is a WNBA champion, getting her first chip with the New York Liberty and Bay Area native Sabrina Ionescu.
The Valyries take on the Dallas Wings Tuesday night at College Park Center. GSV will be back at the Chase Center on Thursday against the Indiana Fever.
