NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Summer is in full swing, bringing the familiar Louisiana heat with it. What better than an ice cold sno-ball to cool off?
To help you beat the heat with something sweet, WGNO has created a list of 20 sno-ball stands in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.
Any New Orleans native will be familiar with Hansen’s, which was founded in 1939. According to the Hansen’s website, it was featured in season 3 of Netflix’s “Street Food USA” and received an America’s Classics award in 2014. The shop is only open during the summer and lives by its motto: “There are no shortcuts to quality.”
Proclaimed as a “hidden gem worth the visit” by Restaurantji, Lou Lou’s remains popular with many locals. Its most well-known flavor is perhaps the chocolate with condensed milk sno-ball.
True to its name, The Frigid Zone offers a large menu of sno-ball and ice cream options. Flavors range from familiar fare such as watermelon to more creative choices like Ninja Turtle, according to the sno-ball stand’s Facebook page.
This year-round stand offers a wide range of items on its menu beyond just sno-balls, from smoothies to po-boys.
Craving a coffee fix along with your sno-ball? This chic shop offers sno-balls, soft serve and espresso, according to its Facebook.
Ike’s is located across from Delgado Community College, making it the perfect sweet treat for after classes. The stand is open seasonally, so keep up with its hours on Facebook.
Flying Dolly’s is “all about creating joy, one cool, creamy or chewy bite at a time,” according to its website. From traditional Southern-style sno-balls to cookies baked fresh daily, the shop has plenty to offer to customers.
Like the Greek myth of Pandora’s Box, there are plenty of good things to find inside Pandora’s Snowballs, from standard flavored sno-balls to even sno-balls with soft serve in the middle. The shop also makes its own ice cream and rotates flavors monthly, according to its Yelp “about” section.
Patrons have been finding a taste of summer at Sal’s since 1960. The stand offers over 50 flavors and endless combinations, according to a Facebook post.
According to its website, Sno-La is home to its original creation, the cheesecake stuffed sno-ball. Sno-La’s consistently changing menu means that customers always have plenty to choose from.
According to the Red Rooster website, the shop was founded in 1977 and is “a restaurant disguised as a snowball stand.” The menu offers a wide variety of options, from seafood plates to homemade pralines.
Burlesque and drag duo Kitten N’ Lou founded Chance in Hell in 2020. The pair said for New Orleans Magazine that they wanted to create a “community hub” for the people of New Orleans. The shop offers vegan, all-natural sno-ball flavors.
Nola Snow is the oldest operating sno-ball stand in Lakeview, according to its website. The stand offers both a physical location and an event catering service.
The popular stand on W. Napoleon Avenue hosts a variety of creative flavors, from a Lucky Charms marshmallow twister to a flavor named for the LSU Tiger. It also sells Dole Whip, which many fans of Disney Parks may be familiar with.
Founded in the West Village of Manhattan, Imperial Woodpecker offers dozens of flavor options. According to its website, it has been featured in the New York Times, Glamour Magazine and more. The stand also offers an event catering service.
Family-owned Droopy’s prides itself on offering plenty of sno-ball flavors for customers to enjoy. The menu also includes malts, milkshakes and various snacks.
According to its Facebook page, Don Cruz Snowballs has a treat to satisfy any customer, from roasted corn to Dippin’ Dots to elote. The stand also serves up specialty fruit sno-balls.
Ash & Oli’s is a fresh face in the sno-ball market, as according to its Facebook page, it recently opened in March. New Orleans Mom stated in its review that they especially enjoyed the “deliciously strong syrup.”
Referred to as a “neighborhood favorite” by Visit New Orleans, Stop Jockin’ offers a variety of options, from sno-balls stuffed with gummy bears to seafood fries.
According to its website, Pelican’s offers over 100 flavors for patrons to enjoy. One popular flavor is the sno-ball for dogs, dubbed a “Pup Cup” on its Facebook page. Pelican’s also offers event catering services.
