OMAHA, Neb. (KOIN) — Oregon State has a lot of pitchers on their roster with local ties, but the guy behind the plate catching for all of them? He’s a homegrown player as well.
Barlow alum Wilson Weber has continued to be solid for the Beavs at the plate during the postseason, totaling 13 hits and 9 RBIs.
For his parents though? His success is hardly surprising.
“I knew he was good when he was three years old,” said Ryan Weber with a big smile. “All of our kids for whatever reason can scoop up a ball and throw it.”
Papa Weber apparently has an eye for talent. He never played baseball, but his wife Jessica played softball in college.
Still, she says, Wilson is something else.
“The difference with him is his work and his drive. People often ask where he got some of his discipline from. It’s not from either of us,” said Jessica. “It’s absolutely amazing to watch him just be him and put in the work without any recognition and watch him excel right now.”
Recently though he has had recognition, being named a second-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association last Friday.
“He’s been an All-American to us from the get-go. We love him. Never been about performance, but you love seeing your kid do well at what it is he wants to do,” said Ryan.
“He’s never been about wanting to win awards, so seeing him do it is just so fun because he never expected it,” said Jessica.
Speaking of never expecting something, the Webers know even getting to the College World Series is not a given.
Seeing their son behind the plate on college baseball’s biggest of stages certainly brings the emotions.
“It’s obviously something that you dream about. You don’t expect all your dreams to come true. You want them to, but there’s so many different things of time and chance and the way the wind blows and everything else so when it happens, you can’t make up how special it is. When you love the game as much as we do, it’s special,” said Ryan.
“It’s spellbinding. It’s hard to even put it into words when people are like, ‘How is it?’ It’s fun to see him down there. He looks the same, he looks comfortable, he looks like he was born for it, and I love that for him,” said Jessica.
