BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — LSU Tiger fans are showing support at Rocco’s Pizza & Cantina for the Bayou Bengals in Omaha for the Men’s College World Series.
Fans are there to support their Tigers at the national baseball tournament but another competition is underway with the Rocco’s Jello Shot Challenge.
The Jello Shot Challenge started in 2018. Fans can buy $5 Jell-O shots to represent their team. The proceeds collected are donated to local charities.
So far on day two, the Tigers are in the lead with 1,993 Jell-O shots purchased. Trailing behind is Murray State with 1,274 and Coastal Carolina with 1,137.
The owner of Rocco’s transformed a party room at the restaurant and turned it into the Jell-O shot room.
Pat McEvoy, Manager at Rocco’s, said the challenge has become so competitive, it has made it possible to quantify who has the best fan base.
“Back in the day, the numbers were like 864 for Arkansas, and one guy bought 400 of them and ran us out of Jell-O and we started free pouring shots like the old days,” said McEvoy. So, you go from that and then the social media aspect of it, which made it so much more intense, and it got us nationally recognized. Once people see that, that competitive fan base kicks in. Every team thinks their fan base is best, but this is a way to quantify and be like ‘We are better than everybody.'”
Want to support from home?
Rocco’s teamed up with JottShots in an effort to increase the total donation numbers. Fans 18 and older can support their favorite teams by ordering shots from home. These purchases will count toward the board and proceeds to the food banks.
