Vacherie man sentenced in murder, attempted murder case

VACHERIE, La. (WGNO) — A Vacherie man was sentenced on Tuesday, June 3, after he was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery in a trial that took place on April 11.

According to the 23rd Judicial District Court, on Nov. 4, 2021, a man approached a car in the Vacherie area and pointed a gun at the occupants, demanding that they give up everything they had on them.

Officials say the driver of the vehicle then tried to flee, which is when Honor shot several rounds into the car. On scene, 16-year-old David Harris, of Vacherie, was found dead in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Detectives discovered that the shooting had happened elsewhere before the car was driven to its new location in an attempt from its passengers to escape.

Maurice Honor Jr. was later identified as a suspect in the case, arrested and booked into the St. James Parish Jail.

For the murder charge, Honor was sentenced to life in prison, for the attempted murder charge, he was sentenced to 50 years and for the attempted armed robbery charge, he was sentenced to 30 years. All sentences were issued concurrently and without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
