Michael Zachery Haley is now facing a charge for Felon in Possession of Firearms in federal court, which is in addition to his initial state charges of Attempted Capital Murder, Aggravated Robbery, and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. All charges are in connection to an incident that took place in January 2025.
The Abilene Police Department says officers initially attempted to follow Haley because they recognized him as a fugitive with an outstanding warrant, so they requested assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Once DPS Troopers attempted to stop Haley, police say he initiated a high-speed chase, during which he fired shots at officers.
The chase ended with a manhunt after Haley fled on foot when he crashed in Albany near the Shackelford County Sheriff’s Office off Baird Street.
Albany ISD, as well as other businesses and residences in the area, were on a soft lockdown as a precaution while law enforcement worked to apprehend Haley.
