The woman was identified by authorities as Nazly Rodriguez-Munoz of Des Plaines.
According to Des Plaines police, officers responding to the area of Algonquin Road and Leslie Lane just before midnight Monday found a female passenger in a Toyota Prius — later identified as Rodriguez-Munoz — bleeding heavily from her leg.
Police say responding officers applied a tourniquet, then the Des Plaines Fire Department arrived on scene and transported Rodriguez-Munoz to an area hospital, but she died there from her injuries.
According to a preliminary investigation by police, the Prius was being driven by Giovanna Rodriguez-Fuentes, a 28-year-old Des Plaines woman, with Rodriguez-Munoz as a passenger. The Prius was going east on Algonquin Rd. and approaching Leslie Ln., police say, when it crashed into the rear of a Volvo semi-truck.
Rodriguez-Fuentes, the driver, claimed the truck was parked on the south side of Algonquin Rd. with no lights on, according to police, while the driver of the truck said he was going east on Algonquin Rd. at a slow speed.
The incident remains under investigation.
