Des Plaines woman charged with DUI in deadly north suburban crash

DES PLAINES, Ill. — A Des Plaines woman accused in a deadly DUI crash in the north suburbs is now facing a felony charge.

Des Plaines police say 28-year-old Giovanna Rodriguez-Fuentes has been charged with one count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities say the charge stems from a crash that unfolded just before midnight on Sunday, June 1, near Algonquin Road and Leslie Lane in Des Plaines.

Officers say Rodriguez-Fuentes and her passenger 49-year-old Nazly Rodriguez-Munoz of Des Plaines, were traveling eastbound along Algonquin Road in a Toyota Prius that night when they crashed into the back of a Volvo semi-truck.

Rodriguez-Fuentes suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash but her passenger, Rodriguez-Munoz, later died at the hospital from injuries she sustained in the crash.

According to a preliminary investigation, Rodriguez-Fuentes had told police that the Volvo was parked on the south side of Algonquin Road with no lights, while the driver of the truck told officers that he was going east on Algonquin Road at a slow speed.

Officers said further investigation into the incident revealed that Rodriguez-Fuentes was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Charges against Rodriguez-Fuentes were filed on Tuesday, June 3, and she was turned over to Cook County deputies two days later.

Rodriguez-Fuentes is set to appear in court on Wednesday and authorities did not provide a booking photo for her.
