The sign went missing in February, just weeks after it was installed. Councilmembers offered a reward to any tips leading to its recovery, but thanks to community donations, city officials were able to pay for a replacement.
The replacement cost just under $4,000, including installation, and was entirely covered by community donations.
The Merced Police Department also sponsored new security cameras to make sure it does not happen again.
“The zoo is beloved, and this moment became a rallying point,” the city wrote in an email sent to YourCentralValley.com on Friday. “We were genuinely overwhelmed — in the best way — by how swiftly residents and supporters stepped up to bring the sign back. It’s a powerful example of how our community comes together to protect and invest in the places we care about.”
While the new sign has been installed, the Merced Police Department continues to support the search for the original. Anyone who has information can contact the Merced Police Department at 209-385-6905.
