Louisiana to honor fallen veterans with Memorial Day ceremonies statewide

BATON ROUGE, La. (WNTZ) — The Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs (LDVA) will host Memorial Day ceremonies across the state to honor and remember the lives of Louisiana’s fallen service members. LDVA Secretary Charlton Meginley, COL (USAF Ret.), is scheduled to speak at several events as part of the statewide observance.

More than 10,000 veterans are interred in the state’s five veterans cemeteries, where LDVA will hold solemn ceremonies on Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m. Each event will include tributes, prayers, and the playing of Taps to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by service members.

“Memorial Day is not merely a date on the calendar, but a day when we collectively pause to honor the men and women who have given their lives in service to our nation,” said Secretary Meginley. “A nation that forgets its veterans and service members will itself, soon be forgotten.”

Kicking off the weekend of remembrance, Meginley will deliver remarks at the Garden of Flags event hosted by the Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, Chapter 1, on Saturday, May 24 at 8:30 a.m. at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. On Memorial Day, he will speak at two ceremonies: the Acadiana Veteran Alliance’s event at Moncus Park in Lafayette at 8 a.m., and the St. Landry Parish Veterans Memorial Day ceremony at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas at 10:30 a.m.

LDVA Deputy Secretary Jerome Buller will also take part in the statewide observances, delivering remarks at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Rayville.

Memorial Day ceremonies will be held at all five state veterans cemeteries:

  • Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery – 3348 University Parkway, Leesville | (337) 238-6405
  • Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery – 2413 Highway 425, Rayville | (318) 728-4346
