ISP: Hancock County deputy discharges firearm during I-70 pursuit

INDIANAPOLIS — A deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office discharged his firearm during an incident on I-70 early Friday morning.

According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, detectives are investigating a reported vehicle pursuit that led to a deputy discharging a firearm on I-70 near the 90-mile marker around 2 a.m. on Friday.

Officials said that deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reportedly encountered a man they “believed to be impaired.” The release said that the man got into a vehicle and left the scene, which led to a pursuit involving deputies.

One of the deputies reportedly deployed a tire deflation device on I-70 westbound near the 90-mile marker. The suspect vehicle reportedly drove through the area where a deputy was standing, which reportedly led the deputy to fire his gun.

The release said the suspect was not struck by gunfire or injured in the incident. The suspect was taken into custody by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

This incident continues to be under investigation by detectives with the Indiana State Police, the release said.
