Southeastern softball is ready for the ‘toughest regional in the country’

HAMMOND, La. — Southeastern softball set a program record for wins en route to its second straight Southland Conference title and NCAA tournament regional.

Last year, the Lions played 300 miles away from home, but this time, it’s a quick drive down I-12 for the Baton Rouge regional.

“I hope it is one of the best softball environments that I’ve ever been a part of,” said Southeastern head softball coach Rick Fremin.

Southeastern is a four seed in a regional that features UConn, Nebraska, and the host, LSU.

“I think it’s the toughest regional in the country,” added Fremin.

The Lady Lions entered the week confident that they could win in Baton Rouge after going 2-2 in the Tuscaloosa Regional last year.

“I think in the past, from what I’ve heard, we’re one of the most watched regional teams or exciting teams to watch from a ratings standpoint. My hope and prayer is that it doesn’t change. That we continue to win fans over and win the country over with our style of play, because it is a little bit different and unique,” said Fremin.

Friday in their regional opener, Southeastern will face LSU, the number ten national seed in this year’s tournament and a team the Lions battled back in February at Tiger Park in a matchup decided by just one run.

“Last game has no knowledge of the next game, but we definitely are more comfortable in that environment. So, that’s a big plus for us and we’re excited to play them and we know what we’re up against,” said Southeastern senior Maddie Watson.

“It’s almost like a second home for us at this point. So we’re excited to be there and we’re ready to go,” said Southeastern junior Maria Detillier.

Another player looking forward to the Baton Rouge regional opener is sophomore Chloe Magee. The Live Oak product was named SLC Tournament MVP.

“Growing up in Louisiana, everybody watches LSU, whether that’s football or softball, or whatever it is. You’re always watching the Tigers. I think they’re a very well-coached team. I think they’re talented, but they’re still another team just like us, and I think it’s going to be a great game between two competitive teams. I’m just excited to see what’s going to happen when we both go out there on the field,” said Southeastern sophomore Chloe Magee.

Southeastern will face LSU Friday at 4:30 p.m.
