Magnitude 3.3 earthquake reported in Illinois late Monday

CHICAGO (WGN) — Residents in parts of Illinois were rattled awake after an earthquake shook Cumberland and Coles counties late Monday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 3.3 earthquake was reported around three miles SSW of Lerna, Illinois, located in Coles County on Monday evening.

The quake rattled the area around 11:43 p.m. and the USGS said it struck around 6 miles under the earth’s surface.

Quakes that register in the third level of the Richter scale are often felt noticeably by people indoors, though the USGS says the vibration would be similar to the passing of a truck.

Visit the USGS website for more information on Monday’s earthquake or to provide a report.
