West Nile virus found in mosquito in Rockford, raises health concerns

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois Department of Public Health has announced the first detection of West Nile Virus in Winnebago County in 2025.

A mosquito collected in Rockford tested positive for the virus on Monday.

Public health officials remind residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites by using the “three R’s”: Reduce, Repel, and Report.

The majority of people infected with West Nile Virus will not have any symptoms, but it can be deadly, especially in older adults or those with a compromised immune system.

Last year, nearly 70 cases were recorded in Illinois, 13 of which were fatal.
