IDAHO FALLS — While drive-thrus are typically relegated to fast food, the Idaho Falls Public Library has opened its own to help residents more easily access books and other items.

According to a news release from the city of Idaho Falls, the drive-thru opened Monday for library members.

Residents can either go online or call the library and order a book to be picked up through the drive-thru.

The release states that books are ready within two business days, and the library has bags of age-appropriate children’s books available for same-day pickup.

Once ready, residents will drive up to the pick-up area and must present their driver’s licenses for verification. The pick-up area is on Park Avenue, on the eastern side of the library.

Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper said the main goal was to make the library more accessible, as residents often face life events that can prevent them from using it.

“There are so many different times when getting to the library might be a little more difficult than we ever counted on … this drive-through represents not just a place to drop off your books, but to pick up books,” Casper said.

One of the library’s trustees, Mary Lund, said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the library had a drive-thru option, and this program is a resurgence of that.

“This used to be a really kind of dark and dingy garage, and now it’s a beautiful drive-thru where you can stop and get your wonderful books,” Lund said.

For more information, visit the library’s website or call at (208) 612-8460.
