NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — Police are investigating an accidental shooting that left one person injured in New Iberia this evening.
According to authorities, just before 5 p.m., the New Iberia Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Mississippi Street.
When officials arrived on the scene, they found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The condition of the victim is currently unknown.
Officials said an investigation revealed the incident occurred inside of a residence when an individual mishandled a firearm, causing the firearm to discharge and accidentally hit the victim.
The individual has been detained by police for questioning.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact New Iberia Police.
