MCSO investigating after reported inmate altercation at adult detention center

INDIANAPOLIS — An inmate in the Marion County Sheriff’s Office’s Adult Detention Center (ADC) has been charged after a reported altercation with another inmate last month.

According to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Derrius Gaddy is being held in custody on the following charges:

  • Two counts of intimidation, each a Level 6 felony
  • One misdemeanor count of criminal trespassing

The release said that Gaddy was reportedly involved in “an apparent altercation with another inmate” on April 29. After the incident, Gaddy was taken to a local hospital and later returned to the adult detention center.

Court documents indicate that Gaddy was taken into custody in early March on intimidation charges. In May, Gaddy’s bond was set at $1,000 cash, according to documents. However, Gaddy has remained in custody since his bond has not yet been paid.

The release said that since October, Gaddy has been in the custody of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office seven different times. The office claims that Gaddy has been named in 13 incidents within the adult detention center, including alleged incidents where Gaddy disrupted jail operations and had “poor conduct resulting in conflict with staff and other inmates.”

“It is clear that Gaddy is not using his time in the ADC productively, nor has he sought out any programs to improve himself,” Colonel James Martin said in the release. “If sentenced to the Indiana Department of Corrections, the MCSO plans on reporting his conduct. This could result in Gaddy losing ‘good time’ on his sentence.”

Officials said that the incident is under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office’s internal affairs unit and the criminal division to “determine the circumstances around the altercation.”

“The Marion County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to the safety of all individuals in custody and believes in transparency regarding incidents within the ADC,” the release said.

According to court documents, Gaddy is expected to have a bail review hearing on May 12, a pretrial conference on May 28 and an early trial for this case on June 2. Officials said no further information will be available because this is an ongoing investigation.
