Teen faces murder charge in McComb park shooting

MCCOMB, Miss. (WJTV) – A 17-year-old has been charged in connection to a shooting in McComb that left one teen dead and another injured.

The shooting happened at Baertown Park just before 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2 during a Senior Skip Day party. Police said at least 100 people were at the park when the shooting occurred.

Pike County Coroner Rashad Taylor said Gary W. Thompson, 17, was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson with a gunshot wound. He died from his injuries.

According to Assistant McComb Police Chief Ernest Perry, the second victim, a 17-year-old male, is expected to be okay.

Perry said the suspect, Kendrick Cowart, 17, was arrested and charged as an adult with first-degree murder. He is being held at the Pike County Detention Center, awaiting a preliminary hearing date.
