Fans flock to Portland stores for Free Comic Book Day
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Superhero lovers, manga nerds and more celebrated Free Comic Book Day at stores across the country – including right here in Portland.

Portland is home to a vibrant community of comic book stores and fans were treated to free books and other merchandise throughout the afternoon on Saturday.

One location which joined in on the fun is Portland’s oldest comic book store, Excalibur Comics, founded in 1974.

“[Free Comic Book Day] creates excitement around our product and what we do,” said co-owner Debbie Smith. “It helps people experience and learn something new. But mostly, it supports your community and it just brings people in and shows us all how much we love each other.”

Held every year on the first Saturday of May since 2002, the goal of the event is to attract new readers to independent comic book stores.
