According to State Police at Mansfield, the crash happened around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday on Route 6 near Bailey Road in Sullivan Township, east of Mansfield.
Troopers said a Towanda Area School District van was headed east on Route 6 when it crossed into the oncoming lane into the path of a tractor trailer.
The vehicles collided and the van driver — 66-year-old Ronald Wickwire — and a nine-year-old boy were killed, troopers said.
Two other students — a 12-year-old boy and a six-year-old boy — were flown to an area hospital. Troopers said the boys are in stable condition at a Geisinger hospital.
“Our hearts are devastated and hurting,” Towanda Area Superintendent Eric Cummings said in a statement. “Please keep our students and the Black Knight community in your hearts as we grieve for the loss we suffered and pray for those affected.”
Cummings said counselors were available for students Wednesday.
