Chicago police say 54-year-old Willie Holmes has been charged with one felony count of first-degree murder.
According to police, the stabbing unfolded just after 1 p.m. near a Green Line stop in the 300 block of North Central Avenue in Austin.
The officer said the victim, a 25-year-old woman, was outside with another man in the area when they got into an argument with Holmes.
The argument escalated into a fight and officers said that was when Holmes allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman in her back.
The victim was later taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Officers said Holmes allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot but was taken into custody just minutes after the incident and a weapon was recovered.
Holmes is set to appear in court Saturday for a detention hearing.
Authorities have not yet identified the victim killed.
