The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. Thursday in the area of N. Market and W. Santa Clara streets in downtown San Jose.

SJPD said after officers made the traffic stop, they discovered the driver did not have a license and was not the car’s registered owner. Police said the passenger was on probation for previous firearm offenses.

Police said a car search uncovered a loaded handgun, 21 grams of suspected methamphetamine and other narcotics.

San Jose PD said the driver was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for several firearm-related charges. The passenger was also arrested and booked for multiple firearm violations, drug possession, resisting arrest, and probation violation.

In a social media post, San Jose police lauded the arrests, saying “Quick action by Central Division Officers prevented violence and took a loaded gun and narcotics out of circulation. This is what proactive policing looks like.”
