Vela has served as City Manager in Sweetwater since 2016 and previously served as the Deputy City Manager and Interim City Manager for the City of Abilene. Prior to that, he served as the Assistant City Manager for the City of Alice, Texas, beginning in 2003. He brings with him 22 years of municipal experience.
Vela began his education at The University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Government. He then obtained a master’s degree in public administration from Texas State University and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership from Oral Roberts University.
“Recognized as an innovative and results-driven leader, Mr. Vela has a strong track record of managing municipal operations, spearheading strategic initiatives, and fostering meaningful community engagement. He is passionate about building high performing teams and aligning city services with the evolving needs of residents—all while working collaboratively with elected officials to achieve shared goals,” the City said in a statement.
Vela has been married for 19 years and is the proud father of two children, ages 15 and 18.
