Angel Reyes, 24, of Lyons, is charged with the first-degree murder of Damian Dunning, 41, of Chicago.
Illinois State Police responded to the northbound Stevenson ramp to DuSable Lake Shore Drive just after 10:20 p.m. on March 3, 2024.
Dunning, who worked as a USPS mail carrier, died at the hospital after being shot inside his vehicle.
Reyes was determined to be a suspect at some point during the last 13 months. On Feb. 7, Illinois State Police attempted to stop a vehicle that Reyes was the passenger in.
He allegedly fled on foot and an AK-47 was located in the vehicle. Reyes was charged with resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon with no FOID.
Reyes was taken into custody on Thursday on an arrest warrant for murder. The FBI was involved, according to ISP.
Dunning’s family was devastated last year after the shooting.
“It renders you speechless. I’m in just pure disbelief,” cousin Robin Wright told WGN News. “Nobody deserves to be gunned down like this.”
Dunning’s family says he was a devoted father to an 8-year-old son and an entrepreneur.
In 2021, he appeared in a WGN Morning Show “pool hopping” segment with Pat Tomasulo. He was delivering mail in the area on a sweltering summer day when Tomasulo asked him to go swimming.
The community raised over $4,300 on GoFundMe after the shooting.
Reyes is pending his first court appearance.
