Illinois Rep. LaHood pushes policy for job growth and manufacturing boost

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — U.S. Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL) made a stop in Rockford on Monday to mark the 75th anniversary of chemical company Thermo-Fisher.

LaHood discussed the importance of creating public policy that is beneficial to job creation and manufacturing.

“What also becomes important is good public policy that allows them to continue to do the work they’re doing. The research and development tax credit, which we are currently debating in the Ways and Means Committee, has a huge impact on the research that’s done here by scientists and PHD’s, on that innovation for the future, and how that helps Thermo-Fisher and other companies in that space. And also having a competitive tax code that continues to have jobs and manufacturing here in the United States,” he said.

Thermo-Fisher produces chemicals and products for biological research.

LaHood discussed the impacts tariffs could have on the country’s manufacturing, saying he has concerns about tariffs being imposed on U.S. allies, and has hopes that deals can be made.

He said he supports strategic tariffs on China, so long as those tariffs can change the country’s behavior in the world’s economy.
