Chris Owens’ legacy lives on through French Quarter Easter parade

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — In New Orleans fashion, a sea of fancy clothes, festive hats and lively revelers filled the streets to celebrate 40 years of the French Quarter Easter Sunday Parade.

Those riding tell WGNO that following the theme is a must.

“The theme today is a 1920s-era Great Gatsby, Easter. That’s why she’s wearing her periwinkle flapper dress from Yvonne LaFleur in Uptown New Orleans,” said Hillary Barq and Alon Barzilay.

But it’s the beautiful hats that steal the show.

“Absolutely. I love flamingos. I love pink flamingos. I had this neon pink flamingo, and I was like, I’m going to turn that into a hat. So, that’s what I did,” said Jessica Carr.

“It’s Coco Chanel all the way. Coco Chanel’s quote ‘I only drink champagne on two occasions when I’m in love and when I’m not.’ That’s the inspiration. Champagne,” said Robin Valerius.

For years, this Easter Sunday parade was led by the iconic entertainer Chris Owens. Everyone says as they ride, she will forever be in their hearts.

“Chris Owens is historic. She’s the city. She’s new world, and she’s sexy. She’s hot, she is champagne. She’s our Coco Chanel and people love her and still do,” said Valerius.

“Chris Owens was a major force in this world and we celebrate her every Easter,” said Jeff Gonzales.

“Love how we honor Chris Owens’s legacy in New Orleans because she really was a big part of Easter in New Orleans and in the French Quarter. So, it’s really a privilege to be a part of this event,” said Carr.

As they travel throughout the streets of the French Quarter, Carr says it’s truly amazing to see all the people who come out for a great time and some wonderful throws.

“It’s amazing. The spirit of Mardi Gras is still alive and well on Easter Sunday in New Orleans. The fact that we have this parade, that we parade through the French Quarter, everything that’s happened, it’s great. It’s a great testament to the resilience of the City of New Orleans,” said Carr.
