Defense lawyers want off deadly Rockford bowling alley shooting

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Attorneys representing the former Green Beret accused of gunning down three people in a mass shooting at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford nearly five years ago have asked a Winnebago County judge to leave the case.

According to court documents, attorneys Kate Cohn, Andrea Lyons, Robert Kerr and Sana Navqi claim they have irreconcilable differences with their client, 41-year-old Duke Webb.

“Defendant appears to have engaged in conduct that undermines Attorneys’ trial strategy and theory of the case,” a motion filed by Webb’s lawyers on April 16 states.

The conduct attorneys refer to the motion isn’t known. Webb, however, has filed documents without knowledge of his various legal teams since proceedings began.

If Judge John Gibbons grants the motion, it will be the fifth attorney change since 2020.

Attorneys agreed during a hearing on April 11 to strike the May 5, 2025, jury selection date from the trial schedule.

Webb is due back in court on May 23 for a status hearing.

Duke Webb is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder, along with gun offenses. He’s accused of opening fire the evening of Dec. 26, 2020, inside the East State Street bowling alley, killing 73-year-old Dennis Steinhoff, 69-year-old Jerome Woodfork, and 65-year-old Thomas Furseth.
