Scam calls surge in Janesville, with callers posing as police
JANESVILLE, Wis. (WTVO) — Police in Janesville say there has been a recent uptick in reported scam calls, with the callers identifying themselves as being with the police department.

Authorities said victims reported being told they have a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for jury duty or unpaid traffic tickets. The caller then pressures the victim to “resolve” the matter immediately by making a payment using cryptocurrency or gift cards or by leaving cash at a designated location.

Janesville Police stressed that they never call, text, or email residents to demand payment for a warrant or unpaid ticket; accept cryptocurrency, gift cards, or prearranged cash drops; or threaten arrest over the phone.

Police also said residents should hang up on scam callers, and never give out personal information.
