2 arrested, person of interest named in connection after theft of bike from car turns deadly

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two people have been arrested in connection with a Hood River bike theft from a car that turned deadly and another person of interest has been named in connection with the investigation, authorities said.

Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said on Sunday that William Edward Hardy Jr. and Elizabeth June Bowman were both charged with second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, first-degree theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle in connection with the death of Stephen Hayes.

Court documents named a third person in connection with the deadly theft, and Hood River County District Attorney Matt Ellis confirmed to KOIN 6 News Johnathon Matthews is being sought by authorities.

Hayes was hit and “mortally injured” on Friday when police say he confronted thieves from stealing a bike in his car and was found on the road near 5th and June Street, according to court documents and investigators.

Despite efforts, Hayes died at the scene.

Hardy, who court documents say is homeless and has general delivery to The Dalles, and Bowman, a Hood River resident, were arrested on Saturday. It’s unclear where they were arrested at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
