The boy was reported missing Wednesday morning and later found in a wooded area near the Sunrise chairlift by Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol, who said he had been unresponsive when they arrived.
Medical teams arrived just after 11:15 a.m. to take the boy to the resort’s medical facility. He was pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m.
Investigators say the boy may have struck a tree on the mountain and had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
“This is a devastating loss for our community,” Sheriff Kent van der Kamp said. “Our hearts go out to the boy’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragedy. We thank the ski patrol and first responders for their quick and compassionate efforts.”
The Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort shared the following statement with KOIN 6 News:
On behalf of our entire team at Mt. Bachelor, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time. As always, we are grateful to our teams and Bend’s first responders for their work today.
