Wrong-way driver killed on I-15 identified

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The deceased victim has been identified as David Rick Garrard, 72, of Salt Lake City.

The road has reopened after being closed due to a deadly crash.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A wrong-way driver was killed on I-15 in Salt Lake City on Sunday, according to Utah Highway Patrol.

At around noon on April 6, UHP received a report of a wrong-way driver heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-80 in Salt Lake City. The driver — in a blue Toyota Camry — then proceeded to go southbound in the northbound lanes of I-15 at 700 South.

The driver then struck an Audi head-on in the northbound lanes of I-15.

The Audi driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition, while the driver of the Camry died at the scene.

Traffic is currently being diverted off I-15 Northbound at 600 South. The freeway is estimated to re-open at 3:30 p.m.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

No further information is available at this time.
