In a 32-11 vote, council members voted to approve Mayor Brandon Johnson’s appointment of Cook County Commissioner Anthony Quezada.
Quezada will fill the vacancy left by former Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, who left to lead the Chicago Park District.
The new 35th Ward alderman was seen hugging his predecessor just after Monday’s vote.
Quezada served as a commissioner for Cook County’s 8th District. He was recommended by a 35th Ward civic committee. They interviewed and vetted all of the applicants for the job.
The 35th Ward represents portions of Avondale, Hermosa, Irving Park, and Logan Square.
Aldermen we spoke with prior to the vote say they support Quezada for the role.
“I want folks on City Council who care about our workforce, who care about people being paid better wages, better working conditions. Anthony Quezada has shown that on the Cook County board and I believe he will bring that spirit to City Council,” said Mike Rodriguez, 22nd Ward Alderman.
Quezada says, in part, that he has a unique set of hands-on experience he gained as part of Ramirez-Rosa’s staff, and that has given him a deep knowledge of city services and the needs of residents.
