ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Zoo made the decision to euthanize their giraffe Punk Wednesday due to age-related mobility issues.

Zoo officials announced the death of Punk to the public Thursday, saying the 25-year-old female giraffe was a beloved member of the Abilene Zoo family for more than 20 years.

“For over two decades, Punk delighted thousands of visitors and helped foster connections between the community and wildlife,” a press release explains.

Punk had been showing signs of age-mobility issues for the past 6 months and was declining significantly in the period prior to her euthanization.

During her time at the Abilene Zoo, Punk mothered two calves and was a grandmother of seven.

The press release also states, “Punk’s passing marks the end of an era, as she was one of the original giraffes who greeted visitors during the days of the zoo’s iconic bridge. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of education, conservation, and community connection.”

Anyone who wants to honor Punk is encouraged to share pictures and memories with the Abilene Zoo.
