LAFAYETTE, La. (
KLFY) — Lafayette Parish has two property tax renewals on the ballot for the March 29 election.
Mayor-President Monique Blanco Boulet said if renewed, these will not cost taxpayers anything more than they are currently paying.
The first millage is 4.47 for road and bridge maintenance.
“What we do with these funds is we do road paving, bridge repairs and road overlays,” Mayor-President Boulet said. “It’s maintenance and operations of our roadways. It is not for new projects. It is really for that ongoing list of prioritized roads that need attention and need maintenance.”
It would begin in 2027 and end in 2036.
The second renewal is 3.18 mills for public health services. That covers mosquito control, animal shelters, drainage, fire protection, health units, coroner services and roads and bridges.
“This tax is covering a lot of basic services that the government provides,” Mayor-President Boulet said.
This one would begin in 2026 and end in 2035.
Road maintenance is mentioned in both taxes. Mayor-President Boulet said this is because there are more roads in need of maintenance than there are funds, making it necessary for both taxes to go toward road repairs.
“Maintaining them is extremely expensive, so the funding sources actually come from several different funds. These two millages are partial funding into our maintenance pot of money,” Mayor-President Boulet said. “Voters have always been very passionate of making sure we have dollars specifically set aside to fix the roads. And that’s what you see here.”
She encourages voters to vote “yes,” saying, “It’s important that these funding sources are there for us.”
Election day is March 29.
