Alleged copper thief electrocutes himself, starts fire

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — A man was electrocuted and started a fire while allegedly attempting to steal copper.

According to Philadelphia Police, officers and the Fire Department responded to a “fire incident” on Roosevelt Boulevard between Grant Avenue and Welsh Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

First responders discovered a man, between 40 and 50 years old, who got electrocuted while trying to steal copper from the inside of a PECO electric box.

He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital and admitted in critical condition. The victim was then airlifted to Jefferson University Hospital for further treatment.
