Lake Zurich HS cheer coach accused of stealing nearly $40K from program

LAKE ZURICH, Ill. — A former cheer coach at Lake Zurich High School is facing charges after allegedly stealing nearly $40,000 from the program.

Gabriele Kelly, 26, of Algonquin is facing two counts of money laundering and two counts of theft after turning herself into authorities on Tuesday.

Kelly, a cheer coach for Lake Zurich High School during the 2023-24 school year, is accused of diverting over $38,000 of district funds for personal use.

According to the district, police were contacted in Feb. 2024 after financial irregularities were discovered by the business department.

The investigation remains active, according to police.
