Illinois bill proposes mandatory dyslexia screening for all public school students

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — A new bill under consideration in the Illinois Statehouse would require students to be screened for dyslexia to attend a public school.

Senate Bill 1672 would require students to be tested for dyslexia as early as kindergarten through third grade, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.

The bill was introduced in February by Sen. Christopher Belt (D-E. St. Louis) and is currently being processed by the committee.

Dyslexia is a neurological learning condition that hinders learning by making it hard to decode words, affecting reading and writing skills.
