ST. MARY PARISH, La. (
KLFY) — On March 6, a man was riding near a wooded area in rural Patterson and came across a pit bull chained up to a tree. As he got closer, he noticed the dog was bleeding from bullet holes all over its body.
Alyssa Muse is part of the animal rights group Aviary Creature Rescue.
“Somebody knows who did this,” said Muse. “It’s not that large of a community. The cruelty has had such an uptick lately that we really need people to be their voice.”
Aviary Creature Rescue is offering a $17,000 reward to anyone with information on who is responsible. Muse said this is just one example of many recent instances of animal abuse happening in the parish.
“If we don’t speak up for them, nobody knows about it,” Muse said. “That’s why we gave Olive a name. We put her face out there. We told her story because we want people to see them as a sentient, loving, living creatures that they are. And they deserve better, and they deserve justice.”
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Gary Driskell sent out a statement about the recent crimes against animals that said, “These animal cases we have seen lately are troubling to say the least. They are reprehensible, inexcusable and simply will not be tolerated. Anyone with information on these crimes should contact us. Your help may be the key to solving these crimes.”
