Gerard Leon Harris, 44, of Patterson, is accused of abusing Olive, a pit bull which was found shot, tied to a tree and left to die March 6.
Harris was arrested Friday morning on a warrant for aggravated cruelty to animals, officials said.
When untied, she had trouble walking as her front legs were severely injured or broken, and she was severely malnourished, authorities said. The dog was placed in the care of Aviary Creature Rescue, where she was euthanized.
Anonymous tips led detectives to Harris, according to St. Mary Parish Sheriff Gary Driskell. Investigators said evidence was obtained that the dog was in Harris’s possession, care and control.
SMPSO Patrol Deputies made contact with Harris Friday morning and transported him to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking, officials said.
“Animal abuse is a crime against the defenseless,” Driskell said. “Those who commit these horrific acts will be arrested and prosecuted. It takes time and work to get the evidence needed to make an arrest. I want to thank our detective and patrol deputies who worked this case and relentlessly pursued the evidence needed for the arrest.”
Bail was set at $20,000.
